Happy Friday!
It has been a bit of a funny week this week with storm day yesterday. I hope you all managed to stay safe in the warm and dry. We have had a busy week back after half term. In our English lessons this week we have began writing our non-chronological reports all about the Benin Kingdom. We aim to finish these by the middle of next week so we can then begin our new unit... In maths this week we have finished our addition and subtraction unit by completing our end of unit assessment today. We will be moving onto multiplication and division next week. We have also started our geography unit on informal settlements. We use our map skills using an atlas to help us find the largest informal settlements around the world. On Tuesday we had a very exciting afternoon, we had our first session of mini police. The children were very engaged and asked lots of interesting questions. As a class they decided that our focus for the rest of our session will be about speeding motorists in our town. In a few weeks we will be lucky enough to go into town with a speed gun to see if we can catch anyone going over the speed limit! Today we have started our new DT project which we will be selling at the Christmas fair! We will be making Christmas pop up cards so look out for these at the fair in a few weeks time! I hope you have a lovely weekend and stay dry! Happy Friday everyone. It is hard to believe where the last seven weeks have gone!
This week in English we have began to research all about the Benin Kingdom ready for our end of unit final writing piece which we will complete after half term. The children will be writing non - chronological reports all about the Kingdom of Benin. In maths this week we have continued to focus on looking at addition and subtraction and applying our methods to solve multi step word problems. We have also been very busy with our French speaking assessments. The children did so well with these and were able to have a conversation with their partner about themselves and where they live. I'm so impressed with everyone for trying their best with these! We have also finished our art unit on futuristic images this week and the children have produced some lovely final pieces using oil pastels to show a glimpse into what the future could be like. Once again the children had an excellent swimming session again this week with everyone trying their very best. After half term we will be starting new units across the curriculum and we have lots of exciting events to look forward to! We will be busy in DT starting a project ready for the Christmas fair (I know it is early to mention Christmas!) I hope you all have a lovely half term break and look forward to seeing everyone back in school after the break. Happy Friday!
This week in Hazel Class we have had a super busy week in all subjects. In maths this week we have began our new unit on addition and subtraction looking at mental and written strategies to use with numbers with more than 4 digits. Next week we will extend this and apply these strategies in multi step word problems. In English this week we have continued looking the book 'The Children of the Benin Kingdom'. We have had several different grammar focus' including the passive voice and using dashes for parenthesis. Next week we will begin researching more about the Benin Kingdom and applying our knowledge from our history lessons so after half term we can write reports based on the kingdom. We have finished our history unit for this half term and we will be starting geography after half term looking at informal settlements around the world. This weeks focus in history was looking at how the Benin Kingdom came to end. Once again the children had a great swimming session yesterday impressing the coaches and both Mrs Moffat and I. In French this week the children have been practicing saying where they live and where they would like to live ready for a French speaking assessment next week. Keep an eye out on dojo as parents evening bookings will be out soon! I hope you all have a lovely weekend and don't get too wet. See you all next week for our last week of the half term. Miss Collins 😊 Happy Friday!
We have had a great week this week with lots of exciting things happening. We started the week with Dingle Dangle Scarecrow Day, we had lots of farmers and scarecrows. We were also lucky enough to have a workshop with the Devon Wildlife Trust all about mammals and we have been swimming! In English we have started our new unit based on the story of 'The Children of the Benin Kingdom'. The children have been busy making predictions of what is going to happen in the story and writing letters from different characters. In maths this week we have been finishing our unit on place value with our end of unit assessment today and next week we will be starting a new unit on addition and subtraction. The children have been busy in their science lesson this week conducting lots of experiments on separating solids - see picture below. The children were also excellent again at swimming this week and Mrs Moffat and I were very proud of our class again! In their PE lesson the children have continued developing their skills at hockey and have been playing mini tournaments this morning. Next week we will continue looking at our new text in english, start our new unit in maths and finish our topic in history. Just a reminder that children should be reading for at least 10 minutes a night and this should be recorded in their reading record which should be in school every day. Children should also be practicing their spelling and on TTRS daily too. Hope you have a lovely weekend! Happy Friday!
Can't believe it is the end of September already. We have had a super busy week being authors in our English lessons. The children have created their own stories based on our school text 'The Fox and The Star' and we have spent time editing and improving our work so that we could publish our stories. We were also lucky enough to have a visit from an author who gave us a very engaging and interesting talk based on her book about expeditions. In maths this week we have continued focusing on place value, ordering and comparing numbers to 1 million! The children have been really engaged and focused within their maths lessons. This week in science the children had fun with experiments involving mixing oil and water! The children worked hard and safely during these experiments. Mrs Ware was very impressed! Both Mrs Moffat and I were extremely proud of our class on Thursday during our first swimming session. All the children were very sensible and tried their best in their swimming lessons. The children have continued working well in history and have really enjoyed their PE lesson with Saints this morning continuing to improve their hockey skills and applying these in matches. Have a lovely weekend! Happy Friday!
In Hazel Class this week we have been beginning to plan and write our own stories based on our English text 'The Fox and The Star'. We have planned to write these from the alternative viewpoint with Star being the main character. The children came up with lovely descriptive phrases to describe the characters within their stories. In maths we have been continuing to look at place value and practicing reading and writing numbers to a million! The children have also continued learning about separating mixtures within their science with Mrs Ware. We had a very wet PE lesson today with our Saints PE coach and the children had lots of opportunities to improve their skills within hockey before playing some matches. I know its only September but we have been busy designing our Christmas cards which have come home today for you to decide if you would like to order any. We defiantly have lots of artists in our class. Just a little reminder that there is an expectation that children are reading for at least 10 minuets a night and recording this in their reading diaries which should come to school every day. Children should also be practicing their 10 spellings and spending time on TTRS daily too. Hope you have a lovely weekend and stay dry! Thank you Miss Collins Happy Friday everyone!
We have had a very busy first full week back. We have started our new guided reading book called 'The Explorer' which everyone is enjoying. Ask your children what has happened so far and maybe they could predict what is going to happen next. In English we have began a new unit based on the whole school book of the 'The Fox and the Star'. We have been looking at the different characters within the story and been writing character descriptions. Next week we will be planning and writing our own adaptions of the story. In Maths we have been looking at place value. The children have been super with this and we will be continuing this unit over the next couple of weeks. Our history topic this term is the Benin Kingdom and have been studying different sources to understand what life was like for the Edo people. In our PE session today we continued developing our hockey skills and even played some matches! I will be setting spelling homework next week. I would also expect that children are reading every day at home and recording this in their reading records. Please also continue using TTRS to ensure children are practicing their timetables. Please send me a dojo if you have any concerns. I hope you have a lovely weekend! Miss Collins Hello,
It is Miss Collins here taking over the Hazel Class blog as I have started working in Year 5! Super excited for the year ahead. Happy Friday! It has been very hot but lovely three days. We have spent lots of time getting to know each other and completing some fun and engaging activities. Today we began a project all about crazy inventions and the children worked in groups to create a crazy invention. Make sure to ask them what they invented! They also had their first Saints PE session which focused on skills needed in hockey. Looking forward to next week where will begin our units in all subjects. Hope you all have a lovely weekend! Miss Collins Happy Friday everyone - we've made it to the end!
What a hectic last week, with lots packed in. Sports Day, a music concert, cooking pasta sauce, P.E. quizzes, games and memories. The children have worked incredibly hard this year and have grown in height, confidence and ability, it has been a pleasure to be part of their journey. I leave you with a few photos from this week and my best wishes for a superb summer holiday - bring on the Sun. Have a great holiday everyone - see you in September. Mr F Happy Friday!
A wet week, what happened to the Sun?! This week, we have been finishing lots of things - in Maths we completed area and perimeter, in English, we completed our story chapters, in Science, our work on Life Cycles and we have designed our own pasta sauce, which we will cook on Monday. (The children will need a container to bring the finished article home in please.) On Thursday, the children enjoyed an exciting session with local artist Ruth Smith, who taught the children about figurativism and abstractism and demonstrated this through her own art and that of other artists. The children were then challenged to devise a scene and using just 3 colours to create their palette, paint it, using acrylic paints. There were some great results (see photos) We finished the week with some P.E. (Tennis) with Mrs Edwards, some really good net and racket skills on display. Next week, the children will be having a fun session for their last one this year with Mrs Edwards. Following this, we visited Chagford Primary School, to take part in a Music Workshop, with other DMAT schools. The second part of this is in September and we look forward to attending. In terms of home learning, can I remind everybody that the expectation is that children read for at least 10 minutes at home everyday, this can be magazines, newspapers, manuals, cookery books, as well as their reading books, as it is all reading. I would also like children to spend time working on their times tables, which are vital in so many areas of the Maths curriculum, I am Remember the Wider Curriculum home learning is for the whole term, I am expecting great things in by Thursday 20th July at the latest (so if you haven't started, now's a great time to think about it.). Next week, the children will be cooking their pasta sauce, performing in a Music Concert on Wednesday, taking their books home, (so please could they have a carrier bag on Monday) and spending their last week as year 5s - next term, they will be the big fish in year 6! Have a great weekend, see you on Monday. Mr F |
