Good afternoon everybody - Happy Friday! It's been another busy week and what a great way to end it today - glorious sunshine, dressing up and lots of outside sports! Well done to all of you for dressing up in red, white and blue or in a regal outfit - some great hair too! This week, we have been working hard on our English unit, really thinking about our invent write. Our text is the short story anthology How the Whale Became, by local author Ted Hughes and fits in nicely with our Science topic of Humans and other Animals over Time, there have been some really good invent stories, ranging from Why Dog wags his Tail to Why Cat chases Rat. In Maths we have been working on Properties of Shape, particularly angles, triangles and quadrilaterals. In Science we found out about vertebrates and invertebrates and in History, we began to think about who was a worse King, Richard or John. On Tuesday, we had another great Forest School session. We used the artwork of Andy Goldsworthy as inspiration for our own natural artwork, that we created using natural materials that we found on the school site. (See photos) We enjoyed a super French session on Monday with Madame Jordan, writing Pen Friend letters to our partner school in France. We have continued with our Art, looking at our School building and thinking about how we could make the space greener and more environmentally friendly. This morning, we have been taking part in the Quad Kids competition run by OCRA, our School Games Partner. The children competed in 4 athletics events, a sprint, standing long jump, javelin throw and a 600m middle distance race. The children were superb and the top 8 from Key Stage 2, will go on to represent the school at Tavistock Arena in July. Finally this week, we finished with a cricket based session with our Saints Southwest Coach - Mrs Edwards. Thank you for the home learnings that have been coming in thick and fast this week, I have been impressed with the quality of the French flashcards and the posters based on Human Evolution, to name but a few. Spellings will be on Dojo for the groups, after next week, a paper copy will be sent home on Tuesday 7th June when we return after half-term. I will have spares, if you misplace them. I have been impressed by how many people are reading every night, keep it up over half term! The Wider Curriculum home learning for next half term, will be a little different, so look out for this. As the Sun is hotter, could I please ask, that children now have a hat and a drinks bottle and sun cream is applied, prior to them coming in to school, so that they are protected. We are lucky enough to be out on the field at the moment, if your child has hay-fever, please make sure that they are medicated. Please look out for the video on Class Dojo, which is a quick highlights review of some of our work this half-term. Next week, have a great week, enjoying family time, let's hope the weather stays like this! Have a great week everyone, see you on Tuesday 7th June Mr F Good afternoon everybody - Happy Friday!
It's been another busy week, less Sun than last week but still lots of great learning opportunities. This week, we have been working hard on our English unit, really thinking about innovating the text. Our text is the short story anthology How the Whale Became, by local author Ted Hughes and fits in nicely with our Science topic of Humans and other Animals over Time, there have been some really good innovated stories, ranging from How the Sea Slug got into the Sea, to Why Turtle has a Shell. In Maths we have been working on Properties of Shape, particularly angles, triangles and quadrilaterals. In Science we discovered why fossils are so important to scientists studying evolution and in History, we thought about who was responsible for the death of Thomas Beckett, was it Henry II, the Knights or was he partly responsible for his own demise? On Tuesday, we had another game of rounders, it has been really good to see the children's improvements in batting and fielding, as well as tactically. We enjoyed a super French session on Monday with Madame Jordan, thinking about writing Pen Friend letters to our partner school in France. We have continued with our Art, looking at our School building in detail.(see photos) Finally this week, we finished with a cricket based session with our Saints Southwest Coach - Mrs Edwards. Thank you for the recommended read sheets, I have all but 4, which I know will be in on Monday. lots of reading going on and a wide variety of different choices to share with each other. We are currently enjoying Street Child by Berlie Doherty, it is the tale of Jim Jarvis, an orphan in Victorian London. It is based on a true story, no plot spoiler but the ending is fabulous and the events from the story still impact on life today. Spellings are now on Dojo for the groups, next week, it's the 6th column, a paper copy was sent home, I have spares, if you've misplaced it. I have been impressed by how many people are reading every night, keep it up! The Wider Curriculum home learning for this half term is out, I have given the children a paper copy. The links and resources for some of the activities are on Dojo - this is due in by next Thursday at the latest. As the Sun is starting to get hotter, could I please ask, that children now have a hat and a drinks bottle and sun cream is applied, prior to them coming in to school, so that they are protected. We are lucky enough to be out on the field at the moment, if your child has hay-fever, please make sure that they are medicated, as the tree pollen has been high recently and when the grass is cut, the sneezes start! Next week, we will be completing our work on How the Whale Became in English, we will continue our unit on Properties of Shapes in Maths; continue our work on Medieval Monarchs in History and look at Charles Darwin in Science. We will have Forest School on Tuesday afternoon and P.E. on Friday afternoon as usual next week. Don't forget as well, that next Friday, in honour of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, we will be dressing up in the patriotic colours of red, white and blue and maybe wearing a crown or tiara. Have a great weekend everyone, see you on Monday Mr F Good afternoon everybody - Happy Friday!
It's been another busy week, but lots of Sun and a great Forest School session to boot. This week, we have been working hard on our English unit, really thinking about innovating the text. Our text is the short story anthology How the Whale Became, by local author Ted Hughes and fits in nicely with our Science topic of Humans and other Animals over Time. In Maths we have been working on fractions, particularly mixed numbers, improper fractions and multiplying fractions by integers.. In Science we started work on Darwin and the theory of evolution. We discovered who Charles Darwin was and why finches were so important to his work on evolution, and in History, we studied the death of Thomas Beckett, in our unit Medieval Monarchs. On Tuesday, we had our first Forest School session, which links to our Art unit - When Trees meet Buildings. We talked through the Forest School rules and then were set the challenge to build a den in sixty minutes, working with some materials that we were given and some that we collected. Teamwork was incredibly important here and all groups achieved a den in the time limit! We enjoyed a super French session on Monday with Madame Jordan, thinking about adding detail to our writing in French. On Thursday, Mr Berry (our Saints coach) carried out a session based on cricket, the children had great fun being the Rock, Paper and Scissors in his active game. Finally this week, we finished with some work on our new Art topic of When Trees Meet Buildings. This afternoon, we worked on observational drawings of the school building, which we will eventually work on to redesign it to be "Greener." I have sent another Recommended Read sheet home with the children, which I am going to ask is returned by Friday of next week - 20th May - as i would like to collect a folder of books that the children would recommend to others in the class to read. Spellings are now on Dojo for the groups, next week, it's the 5th column, a paper copy was sent home, I have spares, if you've misplaced it. I have been impressed by how many people are reading every night, keep it up! The Wider Curriculum home learning for this half term is out, I have given the children a paper copy. It's been a busy week and only four days long. This week, we have been working hard on our English unit, immersing ourselves in the text. Our text is the short story anthology How the Whale Became, by local author Ted Hughes and fits in nicely with our Science topic of Humans and other Animals over Time. In Maths we have been working on fractions, particularly adding and subtracting fractions and fractions greater than one. In Science we completed our unit on Electrical Circuits, and in History, we studied the Battle of Hastings in our new unit Medieval Monarchs. In our French session today, we thought about French poetry and rhyming words. Then, we continued our DT work, based on creating electronic greetings cards. We linked this to our Art from last half term and created greetings cards in a Van Gogh style, with an electronic twist (See photos). This afternoon, Mrs Edwards (our Saints coach) carried out a session on striking and fielding skills, finishing with a game of rounders. This term, our P.E. sessions have changed as we have finished swimming. So, we will have P.E on Tuesday and then the following Tuesday will be Forest School (A set of old clothes and maybe some old shoes or wellies will be a requirement for this). Next week we will have Forest School on Tuesday afternoon. Spellings are now on Dojo for the groups, next week, it's the 3rd column, a paper copy was sent home last week. I have been impressed by how many people are reading every night, keep it up! The Wider Curriculum home learning for this half term is out, I have given the children a paper copy. The links and resources for some of the activities are on Dojo, as well as a copy of our timetable for this term. Next week, we will be continuing with our work on How the Whale Became in English, Fractions in Maths, we will continue our work on Medieval Monarchs in History and look at Charles Darwin in Science. We will have Forest School on Tuesday afternoon, so a set of old clothes, with long sleeved tops please, to prevent any scratches. We will also have our PE session on Thursday next week, rather than Friday, as we have swapped sessions with our year 6 class, who will be sitting their SATs. Have a great weekend everyone, see you on Monday Mr F |
