Good afternoon everybody - Happy Friday!
We're back and it's been a busy first week back.

This week, we have been working hard on our new English unit completing the elicitation task and starting to immerse ourselves in the text. Our new text is the short story anthology How the Whale Became, by local author Ted Hughes and fits in nicely with our Science topic of Humans and other Animals over Time.  In Maths we have been working on fractions, particularly ordering and comparing fractions and mixed numbers.  In Science we completed our unit on Electrical Circuits, and in History, we carried out the elicitation task for our new unit Medieval Monarchs. 

On Monday, we enjoyed another fun-filled French session with Madame Jordan, thinking about pets and how to describe the animals that we keep at home. This term, our P.E. sessions have changed as we have finished swimming. So, we will have P.E on Tuesday and then the following Tuesday will be Forest School (A set of old clothes and maybe some old shoes or wellies will be a requirement for this).

Today, we started our DT work, based on creating electronic greetings cards. We linked this to our Art from last half term and created greetings cards in a Van Gogh style, with an electronic twist (See photos).  This afternoon, Mrs Edwards (our Saints coach) carried out a session on striking and fielding skills, finishing with a game of rounders.
 
Spellings are now on Dojo for the groups, next week, it's the 3rd column, a paper copy was sent home last week.  I have been impressed by how many people are reading every night, keep it up!  The Wider Curriculum home learning for this half term is out today, I have given the children a paper copy. I will put the links and resources for some of the activities on Dojo, as well as a copy of our timetable for this term (Have a look at the home learning from last half term in the gallery.). 

As the Sun is starting to get hotter, could I please ask, that children now have a hat and a drinks bottle and sun cream is applied, prior to them coming in to school, so that they are protected. We are lucky enough to be out on the field at the moment, if your child has hay-fever, please make sure that they are medicated, as the tree pollen has been high recently and when the grass is cut, the sneezes start!

Don't forget, Monday is a Bank Holiday, so get out, enjoy the sunshine, have a great family weekend and I will see you on Tuesday.

This week, we have been working hard on our English unit to complete it with some pleasing results. In Maths we have been working on fractions, particularly improper fractions and mixed numbers.  In Science and Geography, we worked on what the components of an electrical circuit are and how to make them. Whilst in Geography, we explored how we use w and revisited the features of a river system.

On Monday, we enjoyed another fun-filled French session with Madame Jordan, thinking about pets and how to describe the animals that we keep at home as pets and in the afternoon, we made Electrical circuits and tested different materials to see if they were insulators or conductors.

 We finished the week off with double P.E. - swimming on Thursday afternoon and today, Mrs Edwards (our Saints coach) carried out a session on football skills and small 7 a side games.  
 
Spellings are now on Dojo for the groups, after Easter, it's the 2nd column, a paper copy was sent home last week.  I have been impressed by how many people are reading every night, keep it up!  The Wider Curriculum home learning I have had in, has been superb, some really good quality pieces of home learning, (Have a look at the home learning being created in the gallery.) So well done everybody (parents too!).
 
After Easter, we will be starting our new History topic of Medieval Monarchs, finishing fractions in Maths, starting a new text in English, starting Forest School every other Tuesday and there are some other exciting things on the horizon.

The children have worked really hard this term and I have been proud of their efforts and their maturity of attitude to their learning, so well done year 5!
