Friday 13th January

 ​Happy Friday!
Our first full week back after the Christmas break and we are now getting our teeth into things.
 This week, we have worked hard on equivalent, improper, unit and non-unit fractions in Maths. We began a new Science topic of Magnetism, thinking about what we already know about magnets. We also explored the concept of contact and non-contact forces. (See photos)  We have also started our new English unit on poetry, focusing on personification - this week, we looked at City Jungle by Pie Corbett and Evening Class, which we used as a basis to write our own poems based on a classroom that comes to life. (Look out for our published versions next week in the photo gallery.)

On Thursday, we had our first session at the pool in Okehampton, the children had a great time and looked a little tired on the bus on the way back to North Tawton!
We finished the week with a real challenge to our fitness from our P.E. coach Mrs Edwards, this week we completed some circuit training and an agility test.

 We are still working on the spellings for last term and due to illness, we are concentrating next week on the spellings in the 5th column, dated 6.1.23 as we only had half a class for the last week of term.  In terms of home learning, can I remind everybody that the expectation is that children read for at least 10 minutes at home everyday, this can be magazines, newspapers, manuals, cookery books, as well as their reading books, as it is all reading.  I would also like children to spend time working on their times tables, which are vital in so many areas of the Maths curriculum.  I will also send home a Wider Curriculum Home Learning sheet next week, when we have really got to grips with the elements of our new learning for this half term.

Next week, the children will be working on Fractions in Maths, working on their unit of Poetry in English,  in Science, we will continue to look at Magnetism, in History, we will study the Battle of Hastings and in Computing, we will work on Video editing.
