Dear Parents and Carers,
The children have been very busy this week through the afternoons making their Xmas baubles for the Christmas Fayre and practising the Nativity songs and lines. Please keep practising at home. Literacy I was delighted with the children's spellings this week once again - they are doing excellently! I am also seeing big improvements in handwriting. We are reminding all children to write on the line, size their letters appropriately and most importantly form letters correctly from the top! Maths The children have been looking at 2D and 3D shape identification this week. Key 2D shapes they should know are squares, rectangles, triangles and circles - however it is always good to extend their learning so we have also looked at hexagons and octagons as well as pentagons and nonagons. Key 3D shapes are cylinders, cuboids, cubes, cones, spheres, pyramids (square-based and triangular based) and various prisms. Have a great weekend! Mrs Budiman Dear Parents
Our star learner last week was Freddie! He has put in an amazing effort at school and at home with his work - we are really proud of you Freddie! Literacy RWI continues and once again I just want to remind you to read with your child daily. Please keep reviewing the sounds - particularly Set 2 and 3 on the sheet provided. Maths The children are moving onto a new unit of work looking at 2D and 3D shapes. There are lots of lovely songs and videos on this topic on You-Tube to enjoy. Nativity If your child has words to learn (many don't) please do practise with them, they will need to know these off by heart. Illness There are lots of coughs and colds in class at the moment - please do keep children at home if they are too poorly for school. Kind regards, Rebecca Budiman Dear Parents,
Margot is our star learner this week. She has worked hard on her writing this week and has enjoyed pushing herself! Literacy Well done to the children for the excellent spelling results this week. I can see you have been practising hard! Every effort makes a difference! The children's reading is developing fast at this time of year so please keep up the 5x a week reading target! Maths We have been working on subtraction at this time and will be using whole part models to reflect how subtraction works. Remembrance the children observed a minute silence today and produced a wonderful piece of art work on our window to remember the fallen - if you haven't seen it take a look! Science We tested which material might be most suitable for building a classroom in a rainforest. The children tested 4 materials and recorded their results in a table. Have a great weekend! Kind regards, Rebecca Budiman Dear Parents and Carers,
This week's star learner is Alfred! He has been really applying himself to his work and we are really proud of his developing learning attitude. Literacy The children are settling well into their new phonics groups and we are having some great spelling results, so thank you for practising with your child! Maths We are getting deeper into our unit of work on addition and subtraction. The children are currently looking at addition using tens frames and number lines. We are finding differences to complete missing number sentences. All tricky stuff! Wider Curriculum ICT The children have enjoyed working on their ICT this week - using the various tools on the Paintz app - check it out here: https://paintz.app/ Art Continuing the theme of painting we have been printing pictures using lego. Parent's Evening Please sign up on the form on the class door starting from Monday! Kind regards Rebeccca Budiman Dear Parents and Carers,

Science We continue our work on materials and developing the children's understanding of their properties. Sharing Assembly Friday 21st 2.30pm Please do come along to the whole school sharing assembly on Friday. Kind regards, Mrs Budiman Dear Parents,
Jaxon was our star learner last week, he has worked hard and persevered through his work! Literacy Just a reminder children will not have had their books changed this week and spellings are the same. These will be tested on Friday. I have given children an additional book to read to fill in until next book change. Maths We have started a new unit of Maths covering subtraction and addition to 10. Please see the link for consolidation work: https://assets.whiterosemaths.com/web-pages/parent-resources/Y1-HL-Autumn-Block-2-Addition-and-subtraction-within-10-2020.pdf History In our History topic we will be studying entertainment through time. We will consider how sports, festivals and toys changed over time. Science We continue our work on materials and developing the children's understanding of their properties. Phonics Event - Thursday 13th October I will be running a very brief phonics information meeting after school on Thursday at approximately 3.30pm. This will probably be around 15 - 20 minutes long. I hope to show you some of the resources we use and how they connect with what we send home as homework. Please come along if you can. Kind regards, Mrs Budiman Dear Parents and Carers,
Our star of the week last week was Emily, she has shown great spirit and motivation to learn since she started in September. Reading I have reviewed reading records today and would like to encourage all parents to carefully record home learning. It is our expectation that children in Year 1 read five times a week for at least five minutes. Children who do this do markedly better. Reading aids the development of writing and also helps with progression across the curriculum. This week we will be issuing a Reading Award/ certificates to those children who have done their homework. Maths In Maths we are comparing numbers using language such as greater than, less than and equal to and will also be using the symbols associated with this language. Kind Regards, Mrs Budiman Dear Parents and Carers,
Congratulations to Bethany who is our star learner this week - she has worked so hard in the last week and has shown us impeccable behaviour. As the work in Chestnut class starts to get trickier I can already see how the children are giving it their best. Literacy The children have worked hard in phonics this week perfecting their spelling and sentence work. Please remember to record all home reading in the children's reading record, they should at least 5 minutes each day. Maths In Maths we have been counting both forwards and backwards with the children to ten and beyond in some cases. This will be an important skill moving forward as it relates to addition, subtraction and multiplication and division. Friday 23rd September After School Next Friday I will be hosting a short session after school to explain a little bit about how our phonics program works and how to use the resources we send home as well as to answer any questions you may have. Please come along if you can! Kind regards, Mrs Budiman Dear Parent/ Carers,
This week we have welcomed the children to their new class and they have risen to the challenge of a new environment and way of working. In the coming week our timetable will start 'proper' so expect to find reading books and sounds to practise in the children's bags. I'm afraid our reading folders have not arrived yet so it will be really important the children have a book bag to carry their books and papers in. As always may I remind you that your child should read to you for at least five minutes a day - this is part of homework in Year 1. In maths we will be looking at place value to 10, these are simple beginnings but will progress to more complex ideas as we move through the term. Please see the following link if you would like to do any work on this at home: Y1-HL-Autumn-Block-1-Place-value-within-10-2020.pdf (whiterosemaths.com) With the sad news of the Queen's death, we have had a sombre end to the week as we felt this was appropriate. The children have taken part in a memorial assembly rather than a praise assembly. We will be observing the national mourning in line with our Trust schools and as age appropriate. Miss Penny will write more about this in her news letter. Have a great week! Mrs Budiman Dear Parents/Carers,
