Happy Friday, double blog this week due to no internet last week!
We have been busy writing our biographies all about Phillipe Petit who is an amazing tight rope walker who famously walked between the Twin Towers! We have learnt lots of facts and are now experts about Phillipe. We will be publishing and editing them next week. In maths we have been working very hard and have been persevering with some tricky methods and concepts. Our focus has been on column multiplication and using them within word problems. Next week we will be moving onto division so it is important the children are practicing their timetables at home! in science the children have been focusing on magnets and have been learning how to use compasses! In hitory we have contuined looking at different medieval monarchs with this weeks monarch being Edward I, next week we will focus on Hnery VIII. Welcome back and happy new year!
We have been very busy and working hard since we have been back. In maths, we have continued exploring fractions particularly practicing our method for adding and subtracting fractions. The children have had to persevere and be very resilient throughout this week. In our English lessons we have started looking at a new text 'The Man who Walked between the Towers'. This has produced some discussions around sensitive topics which the children have been very engaged and sensible with. We practices our own balancing skills and imagined we were walking on a tightrope between two towers and what that would feel like. We have began a new topic about Medieval Monarchs in our history lessons. We have learnt about William the Conqueror and Thomas Beckett . Next week we focus on King Richard and King John. In our book club sessions we have been looking at book called 'Black and British' which focuses on black people and their lives throughout different parts of history. We will continue to have PE on a Tuesday and Friday for this half term. Spellings and Maths homework will be sent out on a Monday due in the following week. I can't believe we have completed the first term! What a busy and exciting term we have had! This week has been a very busy week filled with festive fun, we have had a first aid lesson with a medic, our final mini police session, EYFS Christmas performance, carol concert and a Christmas party! We have been also very busy finishing off our topics. The children have written excellent stories based on the 'Firebird'. The children had lots of amazing ideas and produced some superb writing. We also finished our geography unit on informal settlements looking at crime can be tackled. After the Christmas break we will be continuing and finishing our fractions unit. We have had a fabulous day playing lots of board games, party games and watching home alone! Thank you for all your support this term. I hope you all have a lovely Christmas break! It has been lovely to be back after a week off. I believe the children worked very well with Mr Legg whilst I was away, and he was very impressed with them all! On Monday the children were lucky enough to take part in a OCRA athletics event in the hall competing in all sorts of different races and events. Yesterday we completed our end of term math assessments, the children worked super hard on these especially as we had two in one day! We also had our last swimming lesson, once again Mrs Moffat and I are so impressed with the progress every child has made over the last term and how hard everyone has tried. Well done Year 5 you should all be so proud of yourselves for your progress in swimming. Today we have continued our geography unit looking at different informal settlements around the world and particularly focused on the biggest challenges each settlements faces. We have also had a lovely Christmassy afternoon making lots of Christmas decorations for our class! I hope everyone has a lovely weekend! What another busy wet week we have had. Lots of exciting things have been happening in Hazel this week. In English we have finished reading our text The Island and have been producing some lovely work including diary entries, formal letters and news reports. The children have worked hard producing some lovely writing. Next week we will begin planning and writing our own sequel. In maths we have continued looking at multiplication and division. We have looked at factors and prime numbers and have had a class discussion as to whether 1 is a prime number or not. In geography we were looking at the similarities and differences between different informal settlements across the world. We have also had another fab mini police session with everyone being super engaged and participating well. Today we have had a busy DT day making our pop up Christmas cards ready for the Christmas fair next week! We have had our dancing shoes on too for our just dance party with pudsey! This week we have had another busy week, with lots of new curriculum topics beginning. In English on Monday we finished and published our reports all about the Benin Kingdom. We have since started our new unit based on the book The Island by Armin Greder, it is very unusual book with some unusual illustrations. I look forward to the next couple of weeks exploring this book further. In maths we have begun our new unit on multiplication and division. Yesterday and today we have spent time looking at multiples and finding common multiples of numbers. In our geography we looked at why informal settlements develop. We discussed the reasons for why we think they develop and looked at why they often develop on the edge of big cities around the world. In science this week the children had fun with different experiments with ice cubes and melting chocolate! In our saints PE lesson the children have been practicing their netball skills with lots of different drills to practice throwing and catching. They have also played lots of mini tournament games. Once again the children were amazing during our mini police session and swimming , setting an excellent example for our school! Hope you have a lovely weekend! Stay dry! Happy Friday!
It has been a bit of a funny week this week with storm day yesterday. I hope you all managed to stay safe in the warm and dry. We have had a busy week back after half term. In our English lessons this week we have began writing our non-chronological reports all about the Benin Kingdom. We aim to finish these by the middle of next week so we can then begin our new unit... In maths this week we have finished our addition and subtraction unit by completing our end of unit assessment today. We will be moving onto multiplication and division next week. We have also started our geography unit on informal settlements. We use our map skills using an atlas to help us find the largest informal settlements around the world. On Tuesday we had a very exciting afternoon, we had our first session of mini police. The children were very engaged and asked lots of interesting questions. As a class they decided that our focus for the rest of our session will be about speeding motorists in our town. In a few weeks we will be lucky enough to go into town with a speed gun to see if we can catch anyone going over the speed limit! Today we have started our new DT project which we will be selling at the Christmas fair! We will be making Christmas pop up cards so look out for these at the fair in a few weeks time! This week in English we have began to research all about the Benin Kingdom ready for our end of unit final writing piece which we will complete after half term. The children will be writing non - chronological reports all about the Kingdom of Benin. In maths this week we have continued to focus on looking at addition and subtraction and applying our methods to solve multi step word problems. We have also been very busy with our French speaking assessments. The children did so well with these and were able to have a conversation with their partner about themselves and where they live. I'm so impressed with everyone for trying their best with these! We have also finished our art unit on futuristic images this week and the children have produced some lovely final pieces using oil pastels to show a glimpse into what the future could be like. Once again the children had an excellent swimming session again this week with everyone trying their very best. After half term we will be starting new units across the curriculum and we have lots of exciting events to look forward to! We will be busy in DT starting a project ready for the Christmas fair (I know it is early to mention Christmas!) This week in Hazel Class we have had a super busy week in all subjects. In maths this week we have began our new unit on addition and subtraction looking at mental and written strategies to use with numbers with more than 4 digits. Next week we will extend this and apply these strategies in multi step word problems. In English this week we have continued looking the book 'The Children of the Benin Kingdom'. We have had several different grammar focus' including the passive voice and using dashes for parenthesis. Next week we will begin researching more about the Benin Kingdom and applying our knowledge from our history lessons so after half term we can write reports based on the kingdom. We have finished our history unit for this half term and we will be starting geography after half term looking at informal settlements around the world. This weeks focus in history was looking at how the Benin Kingdom came to end. Once again the children had a great swimming session yesterday impressing the coaches and both Mrs Moffat and I. In French this week the children have been practicing saying where they live and where they would like to live ready for a French speaking assessment next week.
