WILLOW CLASS

May 25th

30/5/2025

🌿 Willow Weekly – Week Beginning 20 May: Water Cycles, Wake & Shake, and Resilience
This week has been all about perseverance!
We tackled the challenging task of writing explanatory essays about the water cycle. Children used subject vocabulary like evaporation, condensation, and precipitation, and worked hard to structure their writing using headings and subheadings. Even when it was tough, they stuck with it— resilience in action!
In Maths, Year 3 continued refining their time-telling skills on analogue clocks, and Year 4 focused on multiplication fluency and formal written methods. Keep practising times tables at home—every bit helps!
We also explored healthy eating and how food fuels our minds and bodies. Making healthy choices can be hard, but our class showed real maturity in thinking about long-term wellbeing.
To end the week, we had a well-earned ‘nugget treat’—a fun way to celebrate our hard work and growth this term!

🌿 Willow Weekly – Week Beginning 13 May: Poetry, Reports & Concentration
Willow Class was buzzing with focus this week!
We held our first-ever poetry recital, and it was a wonderful success! Many children showed brilliant concentration to memorise and perform their chosen verses, whether solo or in class groups.  We were proud to welcome parents and celebrate this creative event!
In English, we worked on chronological reports using time adverbials and formal vocabulary. It’s a new and demanding genre, but the class stayed focused and determined.
Maths saw Year 3 practising telling the time using analogue clocks—a skill that requires careful attention to detail. Year 4 reviewed money and budgeting, solving real-life problems like calculating totals and giving change.
We also started preparing songs for the end-of-year pantomime—a lovely reward for a week of hard work.

🌿 Willow Weekly – Week Beginning 6 May: Rivers, Reading & Kindness
It’s been a week full of creative exploration and collaborative learning.
In Geography, we deepened our understanding of rivers, building on last week’s clay models to write detailed descriptions of river stages. In English, we read A River and identified subordinate clauses and adverbs of time, preparing for next week’s writing.
Maths had a practical focus: Year 3 worked on measuring liquid and estimating capacity, while Year 4 tackled more complex decimal and fraction connections. Children showed great kindness supporting each other through tricky tasks.
We also marked VE Day by wearing red, white, and blue, and reflecting on acts of courage and compassion.
Reading habits continue to improve—but we’re still encouraging Year 3 children to read at home every day. A kind reminder that just 10 minutes daily can make a world of difference.

🌿 Willow Weekly – Week Beginning 29 April: Stars, Spelling & Listening
We kicked off the month with a focus on listening carefully—to instructions, to poems, and to one another!
In Maths, Year 3 practised reading scales and understanding capacity, while Year 4 began applying their knowledge of fractions and decimals to solve problems. These concepts needed plenty of listening and patience.
In Art, the class had fun (and got a little messy!) modelling the features of a river using clay. Children were introduced to terms like source, meander, and mouth, and applied what they learned in Geography to their creative work.
We’ve also been exploring poetry in preparation for our upcoming recital. Children began selecting poems to learn by heart, and showed thoughtful listening as we discussed rhyme, rhythm, and meaning. A brilliant start to May!
