Hello and welcome to our weekly blog.
This week in English, we have been writing our newspaper reports all about the Last Bear. We have tried hard to try and improve the standard of our writing to a year 6 level. We have been identifying key grammar features to include passive voice, direct speech, modal verbs and adverbs of time. In maths this week we have begun our second unit on fractions. We have been focusing on multiplication. We have been multiplying fractions by whole numbers and by fractions. We have become very confident with the skill of multiplying fractions. In geography this week we explored the challenges of an ageing population. We discussed what challenges the government would face with an ageing population such as a strain on healthcare. In computing, we have started to create our own websites using google sites. We have learnt how to insert images and texts onto our websites and change the font and colour. We will continue with this next lesson. In PE yesterday we focused on playing the game of netball and our pivots. We played a whole class game which allowed everyone to practice their skills of attacking and defending. This afternoon, we have begun creating our own things for our playgrounds using all sorts of materials. We will be continuing with this next week. I hope you have a lovely weekend 😊 Welcome to our weekly blog.
I hope all you managed to get out and have some fun in the snow yesterday and have kept warm! We have had a busy short week with lots of brilliant learning in all subjects. In English this week we finished reading our book the Last Bear. The whole class really loved reading this book and many are keen to read other books in the series by Hannah Gold. We have been busy looking at different features of newspapers and creating our own headlines for our own reports which we will be starting next week. In maths this week we have finished our first unit on fractions which looks at adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers and solving multi step word problems. In geography this week we looked at the challenges of a growing population by looking at two case studies. We looked at the challenges in Kibera in Kenya and in New Delhi in India. Both these areas had significant challenges as the population continues to grow. On Wednesday we were visited by our local PCSO Sean who reminded us of the importance of road safety. In the afternoon we were also visited by the NSPCC who delivered a workshop all about the importance of speaking out and staying safe. Children were remined if they do not feel safe or feel uncomfortable, they should always talk to a trusted adult. Have a lovely weekend 😊 Welcome to another blog.
It feels slightly strange to be sat here in my pyjamas in the classroom! In English, we have been continuing with our story of the Last Bear. We have been super busy reading this book and also learning about different grammar techniques. Today we have been looking at what the passive and active voice and how to tell the difference. In maths, we have been continuing our fraction unit. This week we have been looking at adding and subtracting fraction and adding mixed numbers. Our favourite phrase this week is ‘make sure the denominator is the same.’ This week in geography we have been learning about population pyramids. They are a useful diagram to show the percentage of a particular age group within in a population. We had a go at drawing our own population pyramids for Qatar. In science we focused on the three R’s and in particular recycling. We spent time researching the recycling rules for West Devon and now all children should know what goes in each recycling box so make sure they help at home! On Monday, we were lucky enough to be visited by the Bookery in Crediton who have given every a child a new book. We were able to explore their collection and choose the ones we thought look the best! If you ever want to buy some new books, please support the Bookery in Crediton who have a lovely selection! Thank you for all coming to parent’s evening and for your support with odd socks day and pyjama day! I hope you have a lovely weekend 😊 Welcome to Autumn Term 2!
What a busy week we have had starting lots of new topics. In English this week we have started a new book called the Last Bear. This booked is all about a girl who explores a Bear Island and has found a polar bear friend. We have been making codebreakers to decipher the bear's thoughts and feelings. Today we had fun performing role play of Bear and April. In maths this week we have started a new unit on fractions. So far this week we have been focusing on simplifying fractions, finding equivalent fractions and ordering fractions. We will continue this unit next week. In geography we have continued with our unit on population by researching why the population is ever changing. We looked at factors affecting the birth rate and what affects the death rate. We also looked at how this has changed over time since the 1800's. In science we have started our unit on sustainability. This week we focused on everyday materials. We looked at ceramics, glass and plastics by looking at their properties and what happens to them when they get thrown away. In PE on Tuesday the lesson was based on gymnastics. It was focused on creating different poses and creating sequences. See some photos below. On Thursday our PE lesson was based on netball. We focused on passing and defending by practicing lots of different activities. We finish the lesson with a game of endgame to practice these skills. This afternoon, we have started our new DT unit on playgrounds. Today we have discussed what playgrounds should contain and have began designing our initial ideas. I hope you have a lovely weekend! |
