Week beginning 9th January 2023

On Monday and Tuesday, we spent time exploring the story of the Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson, reinacting the story using stick puppets, creating our own woodlands collage scene using magazines and using the 2D shape tap taps to make a scene from the story. The children are very familiar with the repeated phrases and patterns within the story, joining in when reading together. 
 
The children have started in their new phonics groups this week, after making such fantastic progress with their reading and writing last half term. We hope you’ve noticed how quickly these skills have developed and we are very proud. Please keep up the great work reading at home and having a go at some writing wherever possible. 
 
In PE, we explored movements linked to pirates, going on an adventure together scrubbing the decks, climbing the rigging, jumping on and off the ship, balancing in one leg and lots more. Our Friday session included balancing on benches and climbing up and over large apparatus. We also enjoyed a beanbag balance challenge.
 
Our maths focus this week has been exploring the composition of 4 and 5. We have been singing subtraction songs, role-playing in the small world with wild animals and playing games that hide objects. We have been working on our reasoning, explaining to our partner how we got our answer.
 
Our RE learning linked nicely to our new termly topic as we looked at animals from around the world. We discussed how Christian’s believe that God created the world and listened to the creation story. The children enjoyed discussing the story and making links to their own experiences. They ordered pictures from the story and created some of their own.
