Week beginning 7th November 2022

This week we have been learning about Remembrance Day. There have been many discussions, role-play, and crafts around this. The children have enjoyed listening to music and discussing how this makes them feel. We watched the BBC clip ‘Poppies’ which is a beautiful animation that explores feelings associated with the war. This would be a great opportunity for discussion at home too, please see the link below.

There has been a focus on ‘blending’ this week and the children are working hard to segment and blend words e.g. c-a-t/ cat. It has been wonderful to see the enjoyment of reading and writing in phonics and within the classroom. When reading books for pleasure this week, the children have enjoyed searching for letter sounds they recognise.
In maths we have been partitioning numbers and representing them in many ways. There has been a focus on mathematical language ‘more, fewer’ as we have compared groups of real objects to find which set more/ fewer. This has then been revisited in the continuous provision with comparisons made in the maths, role-play and even the snack table!

In Oak Class, we had an interesting delivery arrive during our RE lesson. As children opened the box, we discovered paper plates, cups, table cloths and a birthday badge. This led to discussions about birthdays and the children were excited to share stories of their own experiences with each other. We then looked a Nativity Scene and some of the children were able to make the link between birthdays, babies and Jesus’ birthday. We will continue to explore why Christmas is important to Christians in our upcoming RE lessons.
