Week beginning 23rd January 2023

​We began the week exploring the adventures of Michael Rosen's 'We are going on a bear hunt'. In the classroom, the children explored the story further, sequencing the order of events using pictures from the book, playing with the characters on lollipop sticks in the tray repeating the key phrases and having a go at making it their own. The class have been working cooperatively in the construction area using duplo and mobilo to work towards shared goals.
 
We went on a frosty, adventure walk around the school ground, going on our own bear hunt. We waded through long grass, squelched through mud, crunched the ice during our snow storm and ducked under branches as we navigated our pretend forest. We even found a bear at the end!
 
In Maths we have explored the numbers 6 and 7, how these numbers may be found in the environment and how they are composed from smaller numbers. The children made the 6 spots of a ladybird writing number sentences for each section and painted their own rainbows using 7 different colours. When moving on to number 8, the children practised representing number on part-part-whole models.
 
This week, we have enjoyed following the children’s interests of volcanos. Linking to our topic of Adventures and Travel, the children enjoyed an adventure to a real volcano, using a 360-degree image and listening to real sounds. We talked about the role of a volcanologist, observed the equipment they use and looked inside a real control room. We worked on a class volcano this week, sculpting it out of tissue paper. We learned how to make a volcanic eruption using bicarbonate of soda and vinegar and made our class volcano erupt!
