OAK CLASS
From little acorns grow mighty oaks...

Week beginning 10th October

14/10/2022

We have had a very creative and an expressive week in Oak Class. This week, the children worked hard to learn their Harvest Festival songs to perform in the Church Service. They all did such a fantastic job and we are all very proud of their performance.

At the beginning of the week, the children explored different textures, searching for familiar sounds and letters in jelly. We practised segmenting words orally into their sounds using our Fred fingers in phonics and tried to find the matching letter cards. The children enjoyed exploring autumnal trays and practised their scissor skills, following lines and patterns.

We had group discussions about people who help us in school. The staff from the kitchen, MTAs and some of the cleaning staff came to visit our classroom too, and we
thanked them for the jobs that they do to help us.

In RE we have been learning about being special: where do we belong? This week we had a recap of the learning that has taken place so far this term. The children have learned about different customs for welcoming babies into the world such as Baptisms and the Islamic Aqiqah ceremony, whispering of adhan and cutting of hair. We passed a doll and whispered our own message into the baby’s ear. We re-enacted a Baptism using the knowledge we have acquired through the unit. Finally, after learning of the story of Jesus wanting to see the children even though the disciples tried stopping them (Mark 10:13–16), the children re-enacted the story for each other.

In maths this week, our focus has been to match sort and compare amounts. We have compared size, mass and capacity using weighing scales, measuring containers and building tall towers with various objects. We took our maths learning outdoors and into the woodland area where the children made observations of patterns in nature followed by a repeating pattern challenge. The children were engrossed in working with a partner to create their own repeating pattern using natural resources.

This week, we have noticed such progress in sound recognition, Fred Talk (segmenting e.g. c-a-t) and blending to say the words. There has been lots of independent writing in the continuous provision and the children are beginning to see themselves as writers. The sounds learnt this week were; SH, R, J, V, Y. Please support your child with letter recognition using their flashcards regularly. This will really help to consolidate the learning that has taken place in the classroom.

Have a great weekend,
Mrs MacDonald and Mrs Nuthall.
