Dear Beech class, What a lovely week we've had! We wrote up our animal stories with Mrs Ahmad, and now all have a book which we are really proud of. We had a lovely trip to Rosemoor which started with a bit of a blip when the coach was 10 minutes late. It was very exciting travelling on the coach, and the children enjoyed spotting windmills, herds of cows and fresh hay bales. Our morning at Rosemoor was spent in the classroom, learning all about how plants grow and potting our own nasturtium seeds. We hunted for interesting leaves and petals through the rose and cool garden. There were many members of the general public who asked us what we were up to and who were impressed with how curious the children were. In the afternoon, we had free time and decided to head through the tunnel to the stumpery and the play area. The giant see-saw was a big hit and the children soon learnt how to work as a group to move it back and forth. It was very special watching the children enjoy themselves and we are very thankful for such super day out! We have continued learning about time in maths, moving onto telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes. We looked at number bonds to 60 today and realised that they help us when telling the time 'to' the hour. For example, when the minute hand is pointing towards 35 on the starter clock, the time is 25 to the hour. We also found out that the 5 times table is very helpful when telling the time. Time is very confusing to learn and as grown ups we make a lot of assumptions about what is obvious. When we start looking at misconceptions, a lot of the rules of reading analogue clocks are not obvious at all. Take away the minute markings and adults can still read a clock, but for a child 10 minutes to 2 and 10 past 10 look very similar. (see the example below) In English today, we wrote recounts about our day out. We focused on using time adverbials, adjectives and technical words to structure our writing. I was very impressed that children could explain germination really clearly. Finlay was chosen to be a seed at Rosemoor and other children poured water, soil and provided heat in order to help him grow - this made the learning really memorable for the children! In Science today, we consolidated our Rosemoor trip by recapping the main parts of a plant, germination and pollination. We really enjoyed using cheese puffs to mimic pollen. We finished off the week by having some golden time in the nature area. Have a lovely weekend! Year 2 team

Hi everyone,
Apologies for the late blog - it has been a busy few days. Mrs Ahmad and I are so proud of Beech class for completing their SATs tests. Over the week we covered 2 reading papers, an arithmetic and reasoning maths paper. The children were really mature in their approach - trying their hardest but also very relaxed. While the KS1 SATs are no longer statutory, they are very helpful and support us in our assessment of how your child is doing. As well as SATs, we also continued reading analogue clocks. It's very important we are confident reading half past and quarter past/ to as we are soon moving onto telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes. If you get a chance over the holidays, please practise this. The format we use in year 2 is "quarter to 7", "half past 9" etc, rather than 6.45 and 9.30. Bringing this in too early will confuse the children if they are not secure at this stage. In Science this week we learnt more about materials. We thought about how to sort materials and worked in teams to think about different ways of sorting. Thinking scientifically (rather than colour, use, size) we grouped into raw and synthetic, waterproof and absorbent and soft/ hard/ bendy etc. It was nice to see the class talking in small groups, taking turns and listening to each others ideas respectfully. In PE, we looked at the difference between jogging, sprinting and running. We learnt that a marathon runner would easily beat us in a 100m sprint race and then carry on running at the same pace for 2 hours to complete a world class marathon time. We jogged around the long track and sprinted along the 100m track. We thought about how our bodies felt when we were jogging and sprinting. We also practised the hurdles, making sure to jump using our dominant leg. Well done Beech class - it's been a fantastic half term. Have a great rest! Year 2 team Hi everyone,
What have we been up to in Beech class this week? In English, we have finished writing our own versions of Tadpole's promise. We followed a repeating pattern of events and key phrases. We thought about how animals change and about broken promises. We have looked at a practise SATs reading paper and talked about some strategies for answering the questions. In Maths, we have been looking at different types of questions ready for our SATS tests next week. We learnt to read the question carefully and underline the key words. We also learnt to double check our answers for small mistakes. With Mrs Ahmad we have been practising how to read the time to the nearest quarter of an hour. One thing to practise before next week is adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers mentally by counting back and forth in 10s and 1s. In Science, we went around the school hunting for natural and synthetic materials. We talked about natural and manmade objects and learnt all about plastics. In Art, we enjoyed working with clay to make models! In PE, we have been comparing jogging and running. We also looked at how to jump, how to run up and land properly. In RE, we carried on talking about forgiveness. Jude made an excellent point that if we don’t get things wrong, we will never learn. Everyone makes mistakes – the important thing is that we are sorry and forgive ourselves and each other. I have sent home quite a lot of homework this week – please don’t panic, as this will be for 2 weeks. If your child would like to do it all before next week, they are SATs style questions and will benefit them before the tests next week. If you would prefer to spread the learning over 2 weeks and half term, then that’s absolutely fine. Have a great weekend! Year 2 team Greetings, Beech Class! It's been quite an exciting week filled with lots of learning. Let's dive into what we've been up to.
In English, we've been reading a lovely story called "Tadpole's Promise". It's all about promises and how things change. We've been thinking about how we change, just like tadpoles turning into frogs. Then, we got creative and planned our own stories using pictures. Our stories had two animals and three broken promises. It was fun to let our imaginations run wild! Math has been all about fractions. We've been learning how to understand fractions better by linking them to food - like when you have a piece of something and want to know how much of the whole it is. We've also been comparing fractions, which means figuring out if one piece is bigger or smaller than another. We finished the week with a quick assessment on fractions. Next week, we will be looking at time and doing some SATs revision. In Science, we've been doing a hands-on experiment. We wanted to know which materials soak up water and which ones don't. It was fascinating to see how different things act when they get wet! We took a trip back in time to Ancient Egypt during history class. With some toilet paper, we pretended to be mummies! It was a fun way to learn about what Ancient Egyptians did with their dead. In Religious Education, we talked about forgiveness using a story about a disciple named Matthew who was a tax collector. We wondered why it can be hard to forgive our friends sometimes but easier to forgive family members. We thought that was because we communicate better with our family and we're more used to having ups and downs with them. We learnt that forgiveness is central to the Christian faith and that we can all be forgiven if we are sorry. In PE, we've been getting active and enjoying the wonderful weather! We've been analysing how our bodies move when jumping and practising running and jumping over sets of mini hurdles. It's been a blast moving our bodies and having fun with our friends. In assembly, we met Frank, who showed us how he lives an active and very positive life with a significant disability. He talked to us about trying our best and being kind to each other. He taught us to celebrate our differences and accept each other for who we are. The children had some excellent questions. Beech Class, you've all been awesome this week. Keep up the great work, and let's keep exploring and learning together! |
